The Algeria Football Association announced on Thursday that Vladimir Petkovic, a former manager of Switzerland, has been named coach of Algeria's national side.
After leading Switzerland for seven years, the 60-year-old defeated world champions France in the last round of the European Championship, sending them to the quarterfinals.
Petkovic, a native of Bosnia, led Switzerland to two European Championship finals and the 2018 World Cup before serving a brief stint as Girondins de Bordeaux's coach in France.
With six points, Algeria is in first place in their African World Cup qualification group, ahead of Botswana, Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique, and Somalia.
Petkovic takes over for Djamel Belmadi, who departed in January following Algeria's failure to advance past the Africa Cup of Nations group stage as the two-time continental winners.
