US to announce 'major sanctions package' on Friday over Navalny death

      

WASHINGTON: According to White House national security spokesperson John Kirby on Tuesday (Feb. 20), the US will unveil a significant set of penalties against Russia in a few days in retaliation for the passing of Russian opposition leader Alexei .Output 


Without going into specifics about the sanctions, Kirby stated that the package will "hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr. Navalny" and for its conduct throughout the conflict in Ukraine.


During a conference call, Kirby informed reporters that the US is putting pressure on Russia to provide "full transparency" over Navalny's death at an Arctic prison colony last Friday, February 16.


At the time, the prison authorities said that Navalny died after going for a walk and passing away.


Vladimir Putin is to blame, according to US President Joe Biden.

Numerous sanctions have already been imposed by the US in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.output


"Whatever story the Russian government decides to tell the world, it's clear that President Putin and his government are responsible for Mr. Navalny's death," Kirby stated.


Kirby stated that additional information regarding Navalny's passing has been sought after by the US embassy in Moscow, "but it's difficult to get a point where you can be confident in what the Russians would say about his death."
