SYDNEY: Australia defeated India by six wickets for a 3-1 series victory and reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years after maintaining composure to chase down their victory goal of 162 after lunch on Sunday, the third day of the fifth test.
Australia crossed the finish line thanks to 34- run batsman Travis Head and 39- run debutant Beau Webster, who also guaranteed the hosts a position in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's in June. Due to a back injury, India skipper Jasprit Bumrah was unable to bowl on Sunday. However, by dismissing four of Australia's top-order batsmen, fast bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj kept the game close.
Fast-forwarding the first two days of the match, Australia took 15 wickets on Saturday and four more in the first hour of Sunday morning to dismiss India for 157.
Before lunch, Krishna took Bumrah's place and dismissed opener Sam Konstas for 22, Marnus Labuschagne for six, and Steve Smith for four, keeping the track's spice intact. Soon after the break, Usman Khawaja, who had been caught behind off Siraj for 41 to leave Australia on 104-4, joined Smith as he plodded out with his head lowered on 9,999 career runs.
However, Head and Webster led the home team to victory with an uninterrupted 58 -run fifth-wicket partnership, with Webster continuing his carefree debut by clubbing the winning runs with his sixth four.
Playing for the second consecutive test as Josh Hollywood injury substitute, Australia's Scott Bol and had earlier completed with figures of 6-45 for a 10-wicket match haul.
